CSA stands for Commissie standaardisering Autobusmateriaal (Committee Standardization Bus material). The CSA1 was the first national attempt (in 1966) to develop a standard city bus for the major cities (In 1982 a CSA2-series was developed). The deployment period of the CSA1 buses was roughly 17 years, but as always there are exceptions, some series were discarded earlier, but more often buses were sold and subsequently used by other companies. It was therefore not uncommon to still find these buses on the streets years later.
The vast majority were fitted with DAF engines and chassis. The lion's share of the bodywork was built at Hainje in Heerenveen, but smaller series were also built at Werkspoor.
