最高列車設計速度為150KM/H , 營運速度為130KM/H , 單組四輛 , 列車為2組8輛組成 , 牽引系統為IGBT , 馬達採三相同步交流馬達 : 傾斜式列車最大的特點流線形車體 , 內裝美觀 , 通過彎道較傳統列車速度提高15-25KM/H , 台北至花蓮原自強號行車時間2小時30分 , 大幅縮短為2小時 。


此列車經公開徵求命名為太魯閣號 , 列車行駛於台北至花蓮間 , 太魯閣國家公園風景秀麗 , 對提升花蓮觀光有極大助益 , 英文命名採用原住名 T A R O K O 其發音包括國 .台 客 .日. 英 均簡單易記。


傾斜基本原理 ; 以太魯閣列車為例 , 車上電腦先輸入路線曲直狀況 , 於接近彎道時 , 列車會從地上的ATP 接收到前方曲線資料的信號 , 在經過車上電腦計算 , 會自動以油壓調整車廂傾斜角度 , 將車輛重心內移並與離心力達成平衡。
