With the standardlocomotiveprogramme, the Deutsche ReichsbahnGesellschaft (DRG) also focused ondevelopinga powerful goods trainlocomotive. From the locomotive with tripletengine,which was designated as BR44, the railway company expected to transportgoodstrains of up to 1.200 t inthe low mountain ranges and 600 t on steepramps. In1926, the first tenlocomotives were delivered and had an axlearrangement of1'E h3. It was notuntil 1937, after increasing demands for trainsupport, thatthis locomotivewent into series production and was purchased inlarge numbers,in variousdesigns.
Until they were replacedbymodern diesel and electric locomotives,the class 44 machines formedthebackbone of the heavy goods train servicethroughout Germany.
The photographic paint is anuniquepaint applied by locomotivefactories on special locomotives to achieve abetterquality of photographs atthat time. It consisted of washable (lime) paintandwas only applied forphotographic work.
