台北市政府捷運工程局配合信義線及松山線行駛採購381型, 共有50組合計150輛。前42輛在川崎重工的兵庫工廠製造, 剩餘108輛則與台灣車輛合作製造,全列車編組為 : DM1 + T + M2 + M2 + T + DM1。 此車輛最大營運速度為80KM/H , 性能上與371差別不大 , 本型車與其他高運量列車最大差異在於車頭外觀採用整合擋風玻璃, 緊急逃生門,頭尾燈的圓滑流線感的設計 , 並增加車體下緣護裙板 , 使得381與 371的識別度提高 , 本列車為301型電聯車算起是第五種車型。
